In August 1944, the advancing Soviet Red Army, along with the Polish Armed Forces in the East, pushed out the Nazi German forces from occupied Poland. A practically communist-controlled Provisional Government of National Unity was formed, ignoring the Polish government-in-exile based in London since 1940. During 1944-1945 different parts of the country were liberated at different times. Mail service was slowly re-established and was serviced by civilian and military offices. A set of three stamps depicting historical Polish Leaders (“Wodzowie”) (Kosciuszko, Traugutt and Dombrowski) were issued in Lublin on 7th September 1944. Today, 81 years later, these stamps are still the most popular among the collectors of Polish stamps.

Dr. Richard Mallow exhibited his “Wodzowie Issue 1944-1945” collection in 2013 International World Exhibition in Tel Aviv. He was awarded a Large Gold (95 Points) and a Special Prize. What is important to note is that the judging was based on international, not national, standards. The jury commented on his essays, vast number of proofs (probably the largest in existence), and commercial letters with provisional cancellations and postmarks. This marks only the second time in recent years that a Polish exhibit has received a Large Gold Medal when judged by international rules at a multi-national exhibition. We are pleased to present this truly remarkable collection, offered on behalf of Dr. Mallow’s estate.
